DuClaw Brewing: Sour Me Unicorn Farts

Quite possibly the most hyped beer this year.

If you could combine your favorite internet meme with a Snapchat filter and a beer, Sour Me Unicorn Farts from DuClaw Brewing would be it.

As the story goes, DuClaw was interested in doing a collaboration with the well-loved Baltimore bakery, Diablo Doughnuts. Thinking that they could do a beer to accent one of their gourmet offerings, DuClaw approached them with some ideas in mind, but were surprised when the Diablos suggested a beer variant of their famous, “Unicorn Farts” doughnut.

The signature ingredient of Unicorn Farts doughnuts is the topping – Fruity Pebbles breakfast cereal and purple icing. So how does this work with a beer? I was anxious to try it out. And so, it seems, does most of the nation’s craft beer community.

Unicorn Farts is a sour beer that pours a dark, amber color with good carbonation. And glitter. That’s right – lots of edible glitter.

So what’s it like? It smells sweet and sugary or, like a friend tasting it with me noted, “like purple gummy snacks.” As you can imagine, it’s definitely a sour beer, and the acidity will make you pucker. The flavor is closest to what I tend to liken to Sweet Tarts candy, and a slight hint of a wheat flavor. As wild as it sounds, it actually gets better the more you have.

That being said, I really only want one, but I totally love how fun and different this beer is. It’s polarizing – people love it or hate it – but you can’t deny the abilities of the skilled brewers at DuClaw. This beer could have easily turned into a huge batch of yuck, but they made the crazy ingredients work together into something that’s fun and and unpretentious in a beer world that can frequently take itself too seriously.

There are still some cans out in the marketplace (particularly around Maryland) so it’s worth trying to find a can or two to experience. At the very least, it’s a great conversation starter.

Have you tried it, or would you like to? Let us know in the comments. Cheers!
